A release of contemporary works, entwining brass, voice and organ within its innovative mix of performer combinations. This recording showcases the variety of different sound worlds which modern brass inhabits. A wonderful compilation of new works from Coll, McGuire and Wallace are introduced alongside the gold standard of Malcolm Arnold. Featuring the voices of soprano Julia Daramy-Williams, mezzo-soprano Ainsley Hamill, and pianist Michiyo Morikawa.
The album includes the first recording of Quintet for Brass by leading young composer, Francisco Coll, a work which was jointly-commissioned in 2018 with Stockholm Chamber Brass and premiered by them as a guest ensemble at the Fringe of Gold Festival 2019, St Andrews.
Songs of the North by Edward McGuire is another exciting first recording, bringing together the beauty of brass and voice in homage to John Wallace’s life of journeys. Originally written for John’s 65th Birthday celebrations and performed at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London in May 2015.
In contrast to these debut recordings, Malcolm Arnold’s challenging Symphony for Brass offers a firm favourite for the brass music enthusiast, and demonstrates the sheer diversity of brass repertoire from recent times.
Two new compositions by John Wallace are also featured in this album, bringing refreshing creativity into the spotlight and offering the listener an opportunity to experience the beauty of contemporary writing for brass.
